Finishing off the Barong Dance in Batubulan
Finishing off the Barong Dance in Batubulan:

Notice the eyes - in Balinese dance, the mouth is motionless, all expression is with the eyes and the rest of the body - especially the hands.
Next is the wicked witch Rangda. Notice the fingernails!

Barong vs. Rangda. Guess who wins?
Barong prevents the loyal warriors from committing Hara-Kiri with their Kris.
At the end of the dance, the two-man Barong costume is put on display.
More dance photos to come!

Four scenes from the Barong dance:
1 - The Gong (gamelan orchestra) plays an overture
2 - The entry of the Barong (a Good spirit)
3 - The Barong's hilarious Monkey friend
4 - Just two of the rest of the many characters.
This is a tale, like so many of Balinese folk tales, of Good vs. Evil (wait 'til you see the Evil Rangda witch), heroism, treachery, and True Love.
The costumes in this dance, like those of all of the "professional" troupes, are complex and beautifully made. At the end of this Barong dance, the two-man Barong costume is set up on a rack for the public to admire it.
